Learning Team Assignments

IMPORTANT -- PLEASE READ. The structure of the course is that each week, individual assignments will focus on building coding skills while learning team assignments will focus on researching and discussing course topics.  Generally, the research gathered from learning teams should be presented as web pages that each student codes as part of his individual assignment. The rational is that each week, each person writes one web page on a specific topic or product related to the course. At the end of the course, we can compile one website based upon all pages (submitted anonymously), which everyone can use as a reference web resource once the course has finished. This is approach is based upon students' interests as discussed in the first workshop.

Learning Team Assignment #1:  Web Authoring Tools

Assigned: Dec. 5 -- Workshop 1
Due: Dec. 12 -- Workshop 2

The team should discuss web authoring tools and review the research provided by each student.  Each student should focus on a different web authoring tool, discuss with the team, but then present the findings via HTML code as described in the individual assignment.

In other words, the learning team assignment addresses the web page content; the individual assignment addresses the web page HTML code.

[Optional] The team should summarize their findings in a matrix that compares tools vs. features.

Learning Team Assignment #2:  Content Management Tools

Assigned: Dec. 12 -- Workshop 2
Due: Dec. 19 -- Workshop 3

The team should discuss content management tools and review the research provided by each student.  Each student should focus on a different content management tool and present HTML code as described in the individual assignment.

For this week, the topic is content management. To find references to this try entering the following search strings in a search engine (e.g., www.google.com):

"content management"    "open source"
www.vignette.com is an example of a vendor that sells content managment tools.
Another source on this topic is http://www.oscom.org/

[Optional] The team should summarize their findings in a matrix that compares tools vs. features.

Learning Team Assignment #3:  CCS and JavaScript

Assigned: Dec. 19 -- Workshop 3
Due: Jan. 2 -- Workshop 4

This week, we will study Cascading Style Sheets (*.css) and JavaScipt. Each learning team will assume ownership of one topic. See this week's individual assignments section for details on how each team member will contribute to this effort.

Each team will deliver a set of web pages that explains their assigned topic. The resulting pages  will be added to the class website to be delivered as part of the final project. See the syllabus for grading criteria (e.g., references, content, etc.).

Learning Team Assignment #4:  Final Project

Assigned: Jan. 2 -- Workshop 4
Due: Jan. 9 -- Workshop 5

As a team, assemble all of the web pages that you  have created throughout the course and prepare a team website and final presentation. Recall from the top of this page that: "each week, individual assignments focused on building coding skills while learning team assignments focused on researching and discussing course topics." Now is your chance to combine these two aspects of the course.

  • The website should explain the major topics (see below) covered in the course and provide code examples. It is best if these can be demonstrated (e.g., changing a ABC in some file results in change XYZ in the browser view). It might be helpful (but is not required) to use the concept of a tutorial as a theme for your project.  For example, imagine that your website is the distant learning version of this course WEB/410.

  • The presentation is an opportunity for each student on the team to get up in front of the class and explain one aspect of the website. This will likely be a code demonstration of one of the outline topics (see below). But, it could be a discussion of content (e.g., research on a topic like content management with recommended vendors and products).

The outline of your website and presentation should more or less cover the topics covered in class, which include:

  1. HTML Forms (e.g., proper use of structure tags such as HEAD vs. BODY)

  2. Tables and Frames

  3. Cascading Style Sheets (CCS)

  4. Java Script

  5. Authoring Tools

  6. Content Management
